Hummingbird Cabana

Due to hail warnings for last evening, I moved most of newly planted hummingbird plants to safety. Some near the house. Some in the house. Finn was not concerned. This bird came before the storm and also was not concerned.

While I wait for more hummingbirds here are a few other visitors. I love this solar powered fountain and so do some of the birds, though the hummingbirds do not. Regardless I’ve ordered another fountain because who needs room for humans on the deck?

I got my flowers set up yesterday but haven’t seen a hummingbird since April 1st. However today I was leaning so far out of the 2nd floor window to get a shot of this hawk I kept thinking don’t be the idiot who falls out of the window.

This is not an April Fools Day post. Saw my first bird today. The shots are through glass and in poor light but the magic is there. Actually the magic is finally here on Eagle Swoop Court.

The sun is trying to make a comeback today. Almost feels like Spring.

My poor plants have a had a rough couple of nights but for the most part have weathered the last few cold nights well and grown. The Cuphea, Salvia and Tube Flower look good. The Apricot Sunrise Mint also looks as if it will make a comeback. The Belize Sage have suffered. I may have put this delicate guy out too soon. But if they don’t make it, I can get more at my favorite store Almost Eden Plants

In my preparation for Hummingbird Season, I’ve ordered some plants that attract hummingbirds. My deck is already filled with beautiful turquoise planters and hummingbird plants from last season but I’ve no idea which of those plants will grow back after our North Carolina winter. There are blooms in some of the pots but I don’t know recognize them yet.

Almost Eden Plants ships plants on Monday and they arrive on Wednesday. The plants are in sturdy boxes, wrapped in corrugated cardboard, plastic, rubber banded and taped so they aren’t jostled in transit. John surrounds the base of the plant with damp newspaper. They always look great when they arrive.

Hopefully they’ll bloom soon. Feeling a little ridiculous with the cold front and 50 degree weather this weekend, but it was 70 on Friday! Crossing my fingers! Down to 30’s tonight and the plants sleep with blankets when it’s that cold 🙂 When they bloom I’ll post the names of the plants.

There is a very nice site called Hummingbird Central that allows you track the progress and location of hummingbirds who are migrating. Visitors to the site can report the sighting of a hummingbird which updates the site.

They been seen in both South and North Carolina. In NC they’ve been seen in Wilmington so they are on their way to Cary. I’ve got my feeder out and none of my potted hummingbird plants are blooming yet but I ordered some flowers from Almost Eden, that should arrive Wednesday. So I expect to see a hummingbird in the next 2 weeks (fingers crossed).

Typically I see my first hummingbird here in NC on Easter, so I decided to put my feeders out at the end of February. I will keep you posted!

Of course these are all photos from 2018. The beautiful flowers come from Almost Eden. Almost Eden is run by some of the nicest people on the planet and I am going to place an order from them tomorrow! The pictures are organized by type of flower.
